Hockenheimring once again receives the FIA’s highest award for sustainability

The Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg remains one of the world’s leading motorsport and event venues in terms of sustainability.

In July 2026, following a successful recertification audit, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) extended Hockenheim-Ring GmbH’s three-star environmental accreditation for a further two years. Following the initial award in 2024, the FIA has thus confirmed the successful further development of the company’s sustainability strategy and its continued status at the highest level of the FIA Environmental Accreditation Programme. By awarding this accreditation once again, the world motorsport governing body recognises the Baden-based racetrack’s ongoing commitment to the environment and sustainability, as well as the consistent progress made in its measures as part of the ‘Lights on Green – Our Race for Change’ initiative.

“We congratulate the Hockenheimring on the renewal of its three-star environmental accreditation. Maintaining the highest level of the FIA Environmental Accreditation Programme demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental responsibility in day-to-day operations. The Hockenheimring is an outstanding example of how top-level motorsport and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand,” said Alice Roche Naude, Head of Sustainability at the FIA.

High standards confirmed

During the recertification audit, all key areas of environmental management were thoroughly examined. These included, amongst others, corporate governance, energy efficiency, resource and waste management, sustainable mobility, biodiversity, and noise and emissions control.

In its audit report, the FIA reached the following conclusion: “Hockenheim-Ring GmbH has a mature and well-established approach to environmental management, based on certified management systems and a structured sustainability programme. As part of the audit, compliance with all 17 categories of the FIA Three-Star Environmental Accreditation was assessed on the basis of the documentation submitted. Overall, the organisation demonstrated strong corporate governance, effective environmental management and control mechanisms, and a clear commitment to continuous improvement.”

Particular praise was given to the environmental and energy management systems certified to DIN EN ISO 14001:2015 and DIN EN ISO 50001:2018, the use of smart monitoring solutions, and the long-standing commitment to protecting the strictly protected crested lark in the area around the Hockenheimring. The development of the photovoltaic infrastructure and sustainable procurement processes were also factored into the evaluation.

“The renewal of the FIA three-star environmental accreditation is far more than just an award for us. It confirms that we have permanently and systematically integrated sustainability into our corporate strategy,” explains Jochen Nerpel, Managing Director of Hockenheim-Ring GmbH. “As an internationally renowned motorsport and events venue, we aim to successfully combine environmental responsibility with sound business practice. The fact that our measures have once again been recognised by the FIA at the highest level makes us proud and, at the same time, motivates us to continue steadfastly along the path we have chosen.”

“Lights on Green” as a long-term strategy

Hockenheim-Ring GmbH brings together its holistic approach to sustainability under the guiding principle “Lights on Green – Our Race for Change”. The initiative embodies the commitment to making motorsport and events fit for the future and to combining environmental, economic and social aspects.

“Sustainability is not a project with an end date, but an ongoing development process,” explains Ring Managing Director Jorn Teske. “With ‘Lights on Green’, we are pursuing the philosophy of developing the Hockenheimring to be more sustainable step by step, whilst breaking new ground in the process. The renewal of our environmental certification shows that we are pursuing our ambitious goals whilst remaining open to new ideas and innovations. Together with our staff, event organisers, partners and visitors, we want to set the pace for sustainable development in motorsport.”

The renewal of the FIA three-star environmental accreditation marks another important milestone on the Hockenheimring’s journey. It symbolises the combination of tradition and a forward-looking approach: building on its history spanning over 90 years, the circuit is constantly evolving and demonstrates that international motorsport and sustainable responsibility can be successfully combined.
