Digital deposit systems are set to make major events more efficient

Initial pilot projects are demonstrating fully automated digital deposit-return systems for major autumn events.

In the first few days of September, the first pilot projects for fully automated, digital deposit-and-return schemes were unveiled at major autumn events. Instead of the traditional chip-and-cash refund system, the deposit on cups and crockery is credited directly to participants’ digital wallets via a QR code at the return point.

This is particularly relevant for event caterers, festival organisers and venues. The digital systems are designed to drastically reduce waiting times at collection points compared to cash deposits, whilst simultaneously minimising the risk of theft for on-site catering staff.

Furthermore, the systems meet the strict transparency requirements of the new packaging legislation and can thus offer a digital alternative to traditional deposit-refund cycles at large-scale events.
