Scientific model aims to make the carbon footprints of events more reliable

A new, scientifically validated prediction model is intended to enable reliable forecasts of the location-specific carbon footprint of events.

On 18 August 2026, the publication of a new, scientifically validated prediction model for the location-specific carbon footprint of events was announced. Against the backdrop of strict anti-greenwashing regulations such as the EU Empowerment Directive, the model is designed to provide mathematically robust emissions forecasts that are recognised by environmental organisations as legally compliant evidence.

This is particularly relevant for event organisers who have, until now, advertised using blanket ‘climate-neutral’ claims on websites or in their proposals. Such statements risk attracting formal warnings.

With the help of the new forecasting model, organisers can calculate and document the CO₂ emissions of venues and catering concepts in advance. This is intended to create a robust basis, rather than promoting an event’s carbon footprint using questionable certificates.
