Protection of minors at events: ban on nitrous oxide for under-18s

Festivals, clubs and security services must adapt their security and control measures to the stricter requirements.

Since 12 April 2026, it has been prohibited throughout Germany to supply nitrous oxide and knockout drops to minors. Possession and purchase are also prohibited. This also applies to sales via vending machines or by mail order (Section 3 of the Narcotics Act).

This is particularly relevant for events, as large numbers of young people gather there. Event organisers are required to take appropriate measures to ensure compliance with the regulations.

Festivals, clubs and security services are particularly affected. House rules and entry checks should be adapted or tightened accordingly. It is also advisable to raise staff awareness of how to deal with such substances so that they can respond appropriately in an emergency.
