44 years of the German Rock & Pop Awards – A piece of German music history

For more than four decades, there has been an organisation in Germany that has become an important platform for thousands of musicians: the German Rock & Pop Award.

What began in the early 1980s as an initiative to promote popular music has, over time, developed into one of Germany’s largest, longest-running and most consistent music platforms. Whilst numerous competitions, festivals and support programmes disappear after just a few years, the German Rock & Pop Award has now been running for 44 years, making it one of the most long-standing events of its kind in Europe.

Around 120 specialist categories cover almost the entire spectrum of modern popular music – from rock, pop, alternative and singer-songwriters, through instrumental music, composition and songwriting, to production, arrangement, recording studio technology and music videos. The competition thus adopts an approach comparable to that of international music awards, where numerous specialist musical fields are also judged independently of one another.
