Energy Sharing: New opportunities for locally generated solar power

The new provisions of the Energy Industry Act relating to ‘energy sharing’ have been in force since 1 June 2026. They enable individuals and businesses to share or sell locally generated solar power directly via the public distribution grid to other consumers in the immediate vicinity. The previous need to go via traditional energy suppliers is no longer necessary.

This opens up new opportunities for the regional use and marketing of self-generated energy. In particular, operators of larger photovoltaic systems will be able to use their electricity more flexibly in future and tap into additional revenue streams.

The regulation is particularly relevant for exhibition halls, permanent event venues and logistics centres in the events industry. Operators of large hall roofs can pass on their solar power directly to neighbouring businesses or service providers. This can help reduce local energy costs and support the expansion of sustainable energy concepts within the industry.
