After a light breakfast together, featuring lively exchanges and good conversation, we begin our tour of the Grand Hall. During the tour, guests learn more about the building’s impressive history: Built between 1957 and 1961 to the plans of the industrial architect Fritz Schupp as a suction and compressor hall for the Zollverein coking plant, the building lay dormant for more than 20 years following the closure of the coking plant. It was not until 2014 that the restoration, carried out in accordance with conservation guidelines, began. As part of the conversion, around 1,800 tonnes of machinery, plant and metal were dismantled to make way for a state-of-the-art event venue. Since then, the owners have invested around 12 million euros in the careful transformation of the historic industrial hall.
Before continuing with the guided tour of the coking plant site, our guests enjoy a typical Ruhr-style meal of currywurst and meatballs. They are then accompanied by a former foreman who worked at the coking plant for many years and takes the participants on a very personal, emotional journey through time. The highlight of the tour awaits on the roof of the blending plant. From there, guests are treated to a spectacular panoramic view across the entire Ruhr region, bringing an eventful day to a close.
“Wow, what a breathtaking atmosphere. Both in the Grand Hall and across the whole site, you can really feel the history and the flair of industrial culture. The guided tour with the foreman, who was still able to recount his day-to-day work at the coking plant, was my absolute highlight.”
