New EU Packaging Regulation

The new EU Packaging Regulation tightens the requirements for takeaway packaging, buffet catering and service materials.

On 12 August 2026, key sections of the new EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) came into force. The requirements for waste prevention in relation to takeaway packaging, buffet catering and service materials have been tightened. Plastics that are difficult to recycle and single-use composite materials are being phased out, whilst packaging must meet stricter recycling criteria.

The regulation is particularly relevant for large-scale events where, for example, finger food, exhibition stand catering or takeaway meals are offered. Suppliers must switch to certified and easily recyclable materials for the equipment they use.

For event planners and catering providers, this means paying closer attention to the applicable recycling requirements when selecting packaging and service materials in future.
