EVVC calls for the retention of cultural frequencies and criticises a one-sided study by mobile network operators

The European Association of Event Centres (EVVC) strongly advocates retaining the UHF frequencies for the events sector. This stance follows a recent study commissioned by the mobile network operators Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica, which recommends a reallocation of frequencies in favour of mobile communications. The association is also concerned about developments surrounding the 2026 Telecommunications Act Amendment.

“The study falls far short of the mark and considers the issue almost exclusively from the perspective of its clients,” explains EVVC Managing Director René Tumler. “It largely ignores the immense importance of the spectrum for business, sporting and cultural events, such as concerts and shows. Wireless microphones, in-ear systems and numerous other applications – including those for safety-critical operations – are indispensable components of a high-performing events industry.”

EVVC President Ilona Jarabek also warns of the consequences of a further shortage of spectrum: “The events industry needs planning certainty and reliable framework conditions. Our sector must not be left behind in the competition for spectrum. Decisions taken to date at international level have confirmed the importance of the UHF band for broadcasting and culture – this must be upheld so that, in future too, audiences can hear every speaker on a podium or every artist and band. We also need our frequencies to ensure that events run smoothly and to guarantee their safety.”

The EVVC expressly supports the position taken by Dr Jochen Zenthöfer and the ‘SOS – Save Our Spectrum’ initiative, which has been highlighting the importance of the radio spectrum for culture, media and events for years.

The EVVC therefore calls on politicians and regulatory authorities to give due consideration to the interests of the PMSE sector in all future spectrum decisions and to safeguard existing cultural frequencies in the long term.
